- At Fort A. Lincoln in the Dakota Territory, the post commander, Lt. Col. George A. Custer bids his wife Libbie farewell on the morning of May 18, 1876. The 7th Cavalry was headed to the Montana Territory to fight in what was known as the Great Sioux War. It was the last time she would see him. As he rode out, she noticed a strange apparition in the sky—a long blue column floating above them, marching slowly out of sight, into the sky. Portentously, a pictograph was found by Custer’s scouts just before the battle showing enemy bluecoat soldiers helplessly falling head downward into the Dakota camp from the heavens. The soul that had seen this vision was none other than Sitting Bull. These two visions eerily foretold the demise of Custer and the 7th Cavalry, and consequently, the demise of the great Sioux Nation.
