- On June 15, 1834, the First Regiment of Dragoons, under the command of Colonel Henry Dodge, set out on their first expedition from Fort Gibson, Arkansas. It was to be the first contact ever between the Native Americans and the U.S. Cavalry. The mission was considered a success, and led the way toward the creation of a Second Dragoon Regiment in 1836 and the renamed U.S. Cavalry in 1861.
