AN ACT OF COMPASSION - Note Cards
The "Angel of Mary's Heights." So named when this Confederate soldier loaded himself down with as many borrowed canteens as he could carry, went to provide comfort to the Union soldiers who lay dying on the frozen terrain. Not a shot was fired for over ninety minutes. It was an act that raised the savagery of war, for one brief moment, to the sublime; one small movement from the horrific to the humane, in the struggle of brother against brother.
